da gbg bet: According to reports in The Sun on Sunday, Everton have joined the race to sign West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans during the January transfer window.
da marjack bet: The Sun on Sunday says that the Baggies are willing to sell the Northern Ireland international with the Toffees and Premier League rivals Manchester City both keen on the 29-year-old, and it could be a big-money deal even though he only has just over 18 months left on his contract.
The centre-back has proven to be a big hit at the Hawthorns following his move from Manchester United in 2015, but he could be allowed to leave in the New Year despite the fact that Tony Pulis fought so hard to keep his captain at the club during the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, the Toffees have endured a disappointing start to the campaign – which was slightly improved by the 3-2 comeback win against Watford at Goodison Park on Sunday – and although they haven’t yet appointed Ronald Koeman’s successor, it seems that won’t affect their future transfer plans.
While the Merseyside outfit may need reinforcements in defence, bringing the West Brom star to Goodison Park may not be the answer to their problems.
Here are three reasons Everton should steer clear of signing Evans…
Age
One of the problems Everton have had from a defensive point of view this season is the fact that they have too many ageing defenders – Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines – and they perhaps need to look to the future if they want to have a more mobile backline.
While Evans isn’t as old as the aforementioned trio, he does turn 30 years of age in January and if the Toffees are going to splash out a large amount of money on a new central defender in the New Year, they would probably prefer to bring in a player that has some sort of potential to improve and resale value.
Speed
When Everton have had the likes of Williams, Jagielka, Baines and Michael Keane in their defence this season, it has been painfully obvious that they lack pace and mobility and they have been punished on numerous occasions because of it.
While Evans is clearly a good defender and an experienced performer, he doesn’t have the speed that perhaps the Toffees need in the centre-back or left-back positions if they want to be challenging for Europe, and he could struggle to significantly improve their leaky backline.
Injury issues
If Everton are willing to spend big on Evans even though his contract runs out in 2019, they should certainly take his recent injury problems into consideration before they launch a significant bid.
The 29-year-old missed 10 matches last season because of two different calf problems, while he was absent for four games earlier in this campaign with a thigh issue, while he was also substituted off in the first half of the defeat against Southampton last month.
