After the 1-1 draw with Bristol City I convinced myself that automatic promotion was no longer an option and that it was the play-offs that would be our route back the Premier League.
It was a bitter pill to swallow and was something that I found pretty hard to accept. That’s all changed now, though. We didn’t expect Southampton to lose at Middlesbrough at the weekend, especially after going 1-0 up after just 45 seconds. But they did and that restored some belief that we can pull this off.
We still need a miracle, of course. We need an already relegated Coventry to beat Southampton on the final day to make it, and that’s only on the basis that we beat both Leicester and Hull. It would be harsh on Southampton if they do end up in the play-offs because they’ve been in the top-two for the entire season, but football can be a cruel game and it’s something that wouldn’t surprise me if it were to happen.
A small glimmer of hope has emerged and we must hope that it begins to shine brighter over the next week. Failure to beat Leicester tonight will condemn us to the play-offs for definite and that glimmer of hope will fade and die, just like our bubbles have done in the past.
Sam Allardyce has said that even if we don’t go up this season it will go down as a successful campaign. We have broken a club record this season, which is great, but I’d swap that record for promotion. Sometimes I do wonder what goes on inside Big Sam’s mind and that comment has to be up there with one of the most stupid things he’s ever said.
Anyway, tonight is the biggest game of our season so far. We cannot lose and we cannot draw. It’s either maximum points or bust in our bid to go up automatically.
We’re capable of pulling off what will probably be one of the greatest promotions ever. With two games left and five points behind, we have been written off all over the country and no one expects us to do it. Just like no one expected us to survive relegation after that gut-wrenching 4-3 loss to Spurs in 2007. We are a side that thrives on achieving the impossible after making life difficult for ourselves, which is why I just have a feeling something great is about to happen for us.
That feeling isn’t necessarily automatic promotion, but it is that we will conjure up something special between now and the end of the season (including the play-offs).
It’s a massive on tonight. Let’s ensure we’re behind the boys as usual and do our best to carry them over the line if possible. Automatic promotion is not in our hands anymore, but we can snatch it back if we give ourselves a chance.
Come on you Irons!
