da casino: According to Football Insider, Rangers are locked in a transfer battle to secure the signature of St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark, who has impressed significantly for the Saints this season.
What’s the word?
Clark has been one of the best stoppers in the league this term, boasting fantastic stats, despite his side sitting in seventh place.
The 6 ft 5 ‘keeper has kept a mightily impressive 14 clean sheets in 32 matches, which amounts to not conceding a goal in 43.8% of the games he’s played in.
As such, he could now be about to earn a big move. Football Insider reported last week that the Gers were planning a swoop for the 26-year-old, but now the same publication has reported that Derby are also in the race.
It could be a fascinating war between two former England teammates in Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
McGregor replacement lined up?
With Jak Alnwick and Wes Foderingham both looking as though they could leave the club this summer Gerrard will surely be on the lookout for another shot-stopper in the market.
Therefore, Clark may well come in and be an instant backup player to Allan McGregor. The two players have similar numbers this season with Rangers’ current number one also keeping 14 clean sheets. However, that’s in two games more, per Transfermarkt.
But After McGregor’s rush of blood at the weekend, getting sent off for a brainless challenge on Mark McNulty, there may be second thoughts over his place in the team.
The 37-year-old isn’t getting any younger and after his howler, a fresher face may be needed at Ibrox. He was a Rangers stalwart earlier in his career and after returning last summer hasn’t shown too many signs of ageing.
That’s until now, though, with his error proving to be extremely untimely for the experienced head given Rangers’ reported pursuit of Clark. It could well lead to considerations of him coming in as McGregor’s direct replacement, rather than his deputy.
Gerrard has done some incredibly shrewd business since arriving in Scotland and he’d be able to add the St Johnstone ace to his list of astute acquisitions if he signs.
